Every year, the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce (MMAC) and it’s Council of Small Business Executives (CSME) solicit nominees from among area companies and honor the 50 that have shown the strongest growth in sales and employment. This recognition reflects Gauthier’s quality and precision that is put forth in their production of their biomedical instruments. Gauthier is best known for their engineering capabilities in high-precision tools used by surgeons who put rods, plates and screws in patient’s aching backs. Their engineering background has allowed them to design such instruments as their patent pending ratcheting screwdriver, an instrument used to tighten mechanisms in the back with, as Michael Gauthier would say, “no-play”. The “no-play” ratcheting screwdriver is an orthopedic and surgical instrument, designed to eliminate movement between the handle and the shaft of the screwdriver. This instrument reduces the side-to-side play and axial movement, allowing surgeons to obtain a solid and precise feel when tightening screws, connectors, or locking implant constructs. The “no-play” ratcheting screwdriver has made surgery more accurate and has given surgeons the sturdiness that they have always looked for in their instruments. With Gauthier’s “no-play”, their continued success in engineering surgical products that not only meet surgeon’s demands, but also work, and having the capability of meeting special design requests made by their customers, the MMAC and CSME had an easy decision on who to nominate for Milwaukee’s 2004 Future 50.
